Award-winning composer and pianist, Daniel Kelly and powerhouse jazz vocalist, Frederick Johnson transform words from Shakespeare’s most beloved plays into accessible & engaging jazz songs!
One-of-a-kind jazz vocalist, Frederick Johnson has performed on stage with such musical greats as Chick Corea, Christian McBride, Roy Haynes & Kenny Garrett and has performed as an opening act for Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie, Aretha Franklin, Patti La Belle, Patti Austin, George Benson, B.B. King, David Sanborn, Ramsey Lewis, Herbie Mann, Nat Adderly, Joe Zawinul and many others.
Pianist and composer, Daniel Kelly has performed with GRAMMY-award winning jazz legends Michael Brecker and Joe Lovano, NEA Jazz Masters Dave Liebman & Sheila Jordan, Don Byron, Donny McCaslin, Oliver Lake, Bobby Sanabria, hip-hop star Lauryn Hill and many others. Kelly toured throughout Southeast Asia and India as a part of the Kennedy Center/US State Department-sponsored Jazz Ambassador program.
No knowledge of Shakespeare’s work is necessary to have a great time at this concert which makes Shakespeare accessible and fun! As one seasoned jazz fan remarked after a concert, “I didn’t even know I liked Shakespeare! This was great!”
Frederick Johnson is a master of call & response and audiences of all ages get involved and sing along to words from plays like Macbeth and Midsummer Night’s Dream. Check out this video of over 1,000 young students singing their hearts out!
