Edgefest 24: Partial to the Edge Part IV has a ground-breaking line-up in store for you with the versatile and multi-talented reedist, Andrew Bishop, a national and international artist who is also Chair of the University of Michigan’s Department of Jazz and Contemporary Improvisation, and American avant-garde trumpeter and recording artist, Jaimie Branch, a forward-thinking performer with a style steeped in free jazz and modern creative improvisation.
American avant-garde trumpeter Jaimie Branch is a forward-thinking performer with a style steeped in free jazz and modern creative improvisation. In addition to releasing her own albums, she is an in-demand session and touring musician in several genres. She has played with several bands including Bullet Hell, Galactic Unity Ensemble, Keefe Jackson’s Project Project, and New Fracture Quartet, and has also appeared with Spoon, TV on the Radio, and Belle Orchestre. She began recording under her own name with 2017’s acclaimed Fly or Die and followed it up with Fly or Die II: Bird Dogs of Paradise two years later.
Andrew Bishop is a versatile saxophonist, clarinetist, flautist, composer, improviser, educator, and scholar comfortable in many musical idioms. Dave Lynch of All Media Guide wrote, “A composer of contemporary orchestral and chamber music, Bishop combines a jazzman’s fire and flow with a rigorous compositional sensibility, resulting in a potent and highly satisfying blend.” He maintains an active national and international career and serves as an associate professor and chair of University of Michigan Department of Jazz and Contemporary Improvisation in Ann Arbor where he teaches applied jazz saxophone, composition, and improvisation. He is a Conn-Selmer and Vandoren artist.
