“Kurt Rosenwinkel’s music is the sound of the future…just like bebop once was.” — Chicago Tribune
This is a rare opportunity to experience an evening with one of modern music’s most celebrated guitarists! Kurt Rosenwinkel has been a distinct and prominent creative voice at the forefront of modern music for nearly three decades. His legacy as the pre-eminent jazz guitar voice of his generation is plainly evident on his eleven albums as a leader, each one the inspiration for legions of musicians young and old across the globe. Kurt’s aesthetic vision and multi-genre facility has caught the ear of some of modern music’s most prominent stars; collaborations with Eric Clapton, Q-tip, Gary Burton, Paul Motian, Joe Henderson, Brad Mehldau, and Donald Fagen are but a few highlights from a remarkably diverse and extensive catalog of over 150 sideman recordings.
Come and hear gypsy jazz at its toe-tapping finest! Third Coast Swing’s music is influenced by the late Belgium-born Romani Gypsy Django Reinhardt & his band, The Quintette du Hot Club of France — think Louis Armstrong with a French accent. Django Reinhardt’s music is steeped in the tradition of rich culture from Europe and blended with Swing era Jazz, later dubbed “Hot Club Music”. An excellent evening of stories and music, this concert filled with swing-era jazz and musette conjures thoughts of French cafés, traveling Europe, and swing dancing to Hot Jazz.
An original composition by celebrated Detroit bassist, Marion Hayden, this project explores the life journey of poet Phillis Wheatley (ca. 1753- 1784), the first African American to publish a book and to achieve international stature as an author. Hayden shares that her purpose with this composition, “is to introduce Phillis Wheatley’s life and work to some and to elevate her life and work to others.” Hayden’s music illustrates different aspects of Wheatley’s life – her crossing of the Atlantic Ocean as an 8-year-old referred to by African Americans as the middle passage experience; the growth of her interest in all things literary, the reality of being enslaved, and the duality of her existence as a celebrated poet/ “African genius” and an enslaved woman.

Husband and wife duo YANG AND OLIVIA are virtuosic talents who create an unforgettable storytelling event on violin and piano. Their programs feature combinations of Chinese music and Western classical.
Throughout history, people have traveled thousands of miles to trade between the west and the east: produce, spices, gold, leather. Music traveled along with them. In this program, you will hear works by a Taiwanese female composer who incorporates ethnic children’s folk songs in her music, an American composer who incorporates Cuban dance music, and ancient Chinese folk tunes arranged for western instruments during a dark time in China when anything western was banned.
Are We Dreaming the Same Dream? is an electrifying concert experience blurring the lines between classical, jazz, and contemporary music as the Ann Arbor-based, “pure gold” Akropolis Reed Quintet joins forces with the Grammy-nominated composer and jazz pianist Pascal Le Boeuf and drummer Christian Euman. A septet never seen before in the history of both classical and jazz music, their fearless approach to creating new sounds and socially engaged art begs us all to answer the question: Are we dreaming the same American dream? The violin, from its humble beginnings as the instrument of the village fool and the clowns, rose through the centuries to dominate the musical world as the most popular and stylistically most flexible musical instrument. This program features antique and modern violins, violas, and bows in an exhibition and performance, presented by Henrik Karapetyan and Ara Simonyan. Each instrument and bow will get its turn to shine in this unprecedented event: A busy violinist-performer and a seasoned dealer combine forces to present an event where the violin itself becomes the “artist.”

The New York Times describes violinist Jasmine Lin as an “unusually individualistic player” with “electrifying assertiveness” and “virtuosic abandon.” And cellist Deborah Pae is praised by critics for her “extraordinary musicianship” (San Diego Union Tribune), “superb tone,” and “high level of interpretative intelligence” (Transcentury).
This second installment of KCH’s new Kerrytown “Opera” House series will feature artists from the Toledo Opera in an Opera Arias & Scenes Program with Toledo Opera’s Co-Artistic Director and pianist, Kevin Bylsma. This program is inspired by Toledo Opera’s upcoming April production of grand opera scenes and choruses!
KALEIDOSCOPE
Some concerts are a coat of many colors! Classical chamber groups might play folk or bluegrass pieces; a cabaret concert might include some classical songs; or, there just might be more than one genre presented in a single concert. With this designation, Kerrytown Concert House embraces multi- genre programming and collaborations!
“…weaves actual bayou sounds into joyous, meditative rhythms and melodies colliding with dense three-part harmonies.” ~The Gambit Weekly – “2017 Artists to Watch” Feature
Hailed as a band with “galactic ambitions,” Blato Zlato is a powerhouse Balkan music collective that weaves the magic of traditional Eastern European folk music with contemporary textural majesty. The group captivates listeners with dark and haunting three-part vocal harmonies and thunderous odd-metered rhythms. As a part of the Balkan musical diaspora, Blato Zlato explores the immigrant experience and seeks to build meaningful cultural and musical bridges between continents, with a particular focus on Bulgarian folk songs and Bulgarian language-based compositions.
Abigail Stauffer and the Wisdom (featuring Stauffer on guitar/vocals and cellist, Dave Haughey) blend soulful pop vocals with the rare and distinct sound of jazz cello. Dave’s fluid mastery over his instrument lays down a foundation over which Abigail effortlessly jumps between registers, revealing her astounding vocal control and tone palate. Every song is a captivating showcase of confidence and vulnerability, crafting a balance of pain, hope, and joy. Their show evokes so much emotion, it’s hard to believe each song isn’t specifically about you.

Area artists will come together in concert to honor Bolcom & Morris!
The iconic duo (and Ann Arbor townies), William Bolcom and Joan Morris have literally performed at Kerrytown Concert House since the doors opened in 1984, when they, along with many of their illustrious friends, presented two benefit concerts to help give the budding concert house a kickstart. Indeed, those concerts gave KCH an auspicious beginning, putting it on the map of the arts, and soon “the House” became an important part of the cultural fabric not only of Ann Arbor but also Southeastern Michigan.
Over the years, Bill & Joan have delighted KCH audiences with Bill’s original compositions and with music from the ragtime era to the end of the 20th century. THIS concert is meant to delight the duo themselves, with special performances honoring their brilliance and the indelible artistic footprint they have made on the House as well as the cultural community.
“Musique Noire is an exuberant, jazzy ensemble. . .experience this magical, sophisticated chamber performance and be transported to many other lands via soulful, global Detroit.”
Kerrytown Concert House welcomes back the extraordinary Musique Noire, a Detroit-based women-led strings and percussion ensemble performing jazz and world music. A must see and hear!
Serendipity, a mutual friend, and a shared love of string band music brought Sprig of That together in Minneapolis in January of 2018. Since then, the trio, comprising Krissy Bergmark on tabla, Isabel Dammann on violin, and Ilan Blanck on guitar, has made a name for themselves performing lush original works and fresh arrangements of folk favorites that have delighted audiences across the country. Occupying a space somewhere between Northern European fiddle styles, modern American string music, and the “indie classical” contemporary classical movement, the trio distills a wide range of musical interests into a cohesive and joyful sound that is constantly evolving
CABARET HOUSE
In 1984, the iconic cabaret duo, Bolcom & Morris, made cabaret performance irresistible at Kerrytown Concert House likening this space to that of the old Village Gate nightclub in New York. Indeed, Cabaret is irresistible here, where the women of Wine, Women, and Song enchant you, the “Detroit original” Alvin Waddles knocks your socks off, and supremely talented young artists like Ari Axelrod sing their hearts – and their stories – out through song. Look to this genre series for a special, up close and personal theatrical experience featuring music, song, dance, story-telling, and always, a little drama!
