Spiritus et Chordae - Dream Travels:
A World Tour with Flute & Guitar
Emily Olson, flute & Brad DeRoche, guitar
Friday, July 14th, 2023 at 7:30 PM

Flutist Emily Olson and guitarist Brad DeRoche link ‘Breath and Strings’ with their new duo, Spiritus et Chordae, bringing passion, lyricism, and virtuosity to the classical repertoire for flute and guitar. In their debut Kerrytown Concert House performance, Olson and DeRoche invite the audience on a world tour evoking the harmonic landscapes, melodies, and rhythms of the American Southwest, England, Japan, Roumania, Spain, and South America. “Dream Travels” takes you on a musical journey you won’t want to miss!
Works by Carmen Liliana Marulanda, Michio Miyagi, Béla Bartók, Francisco Tárrega, Katherine Hoover, Ali Ryerson, and Gary Schocker.
As a classical flutist, Emily Olson has performed for over 20 years with the Ann Arbor, Flint, and Saginaw Bay Symphony Orchestras, Michigan Sinfonietta, Ann Arbor Civic Theatre, and the Encore Musical Theatre Company. Summer music performances have brought Emily to Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, where she has appeared with the Pine Mountain Music Festival and Strings on the Bay chamber music series. Originally from Ohio, Emily attended The Ohio State University for her undergraduate studies in performance and music education, and she earned her master’s degree in flute performance from the University of Michigan. Deeply invested in employing the arts in service of others, Emily has maintained a private teaching practice, served as a therapeutic musician in hospice and palliative care settings, and cultivated an arts-based mindfulness practice as an approach to health and wellness. Also a skilled administrator, Emily has worked to promote the arts for corporate, educational, healthcare, and nonprofit organizations throughout her career. She currently serves as the Development Manager for Kerrytown Concert House (KCH), where she builds connections in the community to support local and emerging talent and nationally and internationally established artists.

Throughout his career, he has been drawn to dramatic, lyrical, and virtuosic music; with the works of Bach and Spanish composers ever-present in his concert programs. He has recently become a recording artist for the Centaur Records label with “Serenata Espanola: Spanish Guitar Classics” as his first release. He is a Professor of Music and Chair of the Music Department at Delta College where he teaches guitar, music history, and music theory courses. He received the Bergstein Award for Teaching Excellence, the highest honor for a Professor at Delta College, as well as the Barstow-Frevel Award for scholarly achievement. He is the Reviews Editor for the scholarly guitar journal “Soundboard” and also serves on the board of trustees for the Guitar Foundation of America, an organization that promotes the classical guitar nationally and internationally. Dr. DeRoche is passionate about the classical guitar and has dedicated himself to the beauty and artistry of this fine instrument and its repertoire.
“DeRoche’s articulation of the music is unfailingly clear, and his tone is both lovely and capable of a wide range of colors and dynamics… masterful and enchanting phrasing” – Fanfare – May/June 2022
