"...an astonishing mix of pungency and finesse." -Berkshire Record

Violinist Madalyn Parnas and cellist Cicely Parnas are gifted young soloists and chamber musicians in their own right. Together, they have collaborated as duo parnas for the last dozen years, winning first prize in international chamber music competition at Carnegie Hall, releasing two internationally acclaimed CDs, and earning rave reviews for performances of 21st century compositions written for them by award-winning composers. Of their 2009 performance of Brian Fennelly’s 'Sigol' for Two at Symphony Space, New York Times critic Allan Kozinn wrote "The duo parnas gave the piece an electrifying reading, couching it in a lush tone and executing its complex interplay with pinpoint precision."

duo parnas has performed numerous concerts with orchestras, including the New York String Orchestra and the Albany Symphony Orchestra. Forthcoming performances both in solo and duo concertos are scheduled with the Schenectady Symphony (New York), the Verde Valley Sinfonietta (Arizona) and the St. Petersburg Chamber Orchestra (Russia).

“Mark helias is one of the finest acoustic bassplayers in the contemporary jazz avant-garde, a guy who can play inside as well as outside and who stretches the boundaries in both directions.” — Will Layman, Pop Matters

Mark Helias has composed a program of solo bass pieces that explore a broad range of sonic and musical expression. Some are fully notated compositions, others span a range of improvisational approaches accumulated over a thirty-five year career performing with many of the most important American improvisers. His concerts normally are realized with only the double bass in solo with no electronic modifications or processing — It is a true acoustic journey on a noble instrument.

Carl Ludwig Hübsch`s preference for wind instruments and lower frequencies has led to this formation of a high-caliber constellation: Matthias Schubert on tenor saxophone and trombonist Wolter Wierbos. Well-known as improvisers and instrumentalists, they contribute a unique awareness of new concepts. Hübsch's compositions are written especially for this trio, making use of each musician's characteristic playing styles. Their sound combines contemporary, jazz and improvised music, while every now and then, a traditional Navaho song or a Sun Ra tune tune can cross the listener's road. Concerts are driven by the excellent, humorous and vivid playing of the musicians and their ability to turn written notations freely into real-time stories. The ensemble, along with drummer Gerry Hemingway, have recently released an album of Hübsch`s compositions, "The creators bend a master plan” on the NEOS label.

The Claudia Quintet’s music demonstrates that “Innovative jazz does not have to be harsh, angry, loud, shrill or grating; it can be delicate, witty, ethereal and radiantly lyric, as the Claudia Quintet pointed out…” [Chicago Tribune]. Formed by composer / drummer / arranger John Hollenbeck in 1997, this NYC ensemble’s sound explores the edge without alienating the mainstream, proving that genre-defying music can be for everyone. Over the past decade, the group has released four CDs that are critically acclaimed worldwide and whose appeal extends well beyond (while still including) traditional jazz audiences. The group’s first album, “The Claudia Quintet,” was released on the Blueshift CRI record label. The group has since established a long-time relationship with the Cuneiform label. In the course of the thousands of miles they have traveled together and hundreds of concerts they’ve played, the Claudia Quintet has evolved and grown, developing a dynamic live sound based on trust and spontaneity. They bring this powerful energy into the studio, where they record the old-fashioned way, live, playing as a band.

Brass Blowout: Area brass players join the all-star Edgefest artists in this festival closer. The ensemble will play original compositions contributed by several group members.
Inspired by a shared childhood of torturous cohabitation, mutual DNA and brotherly love, brothers Tim and Ben Cohen combine composition and improvisation to tell a cohesive, flowing narrative of modern, avant-garde jazz. Invited to join the family is the amazing (and brave) Matt Endahl who, armed to the teeth with a vintage Fender Rhodes, will navigate the dangerous terrain which exists between Ben Cohen's saxophone and Tim Cohen's drums. The principle goals of the group are to entertain, to enrich, and most importantly to heal. Kin-Aesthetic: sound born of suffering.

The Mellow Edwards has existed since 1988 when Curtis Hasselbring persuaded John Dirac and Jerome Dupree to play with him at the Middle East Cafe in Cambridge MA. The group’s repertoire consisted of hardcore versions of Don Cherry and Henry Threadgill tunes as well as Dirac’s non-autobiographical opus “the Green Haircut." Fourteen years, over a dozen musicians and many pieces of music later, Curtis took a giant leap into the future and renamed the group “The New Mellow Edwards.” He composes the majority of the group’s repertoire (with the exception of the occasional 80s rock/20s jazz cover) and plays the trombone and various odd noise-making devices. The other members of the group for the last three years have been Trevor Dunn, John Hollenbeck, and Chris Speed. Although there has also been an illustrious cast of subs (a veritable who’s who of people in Curtis’s address book), the NMEs (as they are often called) have evolved into a top-notch performing unit who leave a trail of fried PA speakers, broken folding chairs and unused half-price drink tickets....The band has released two recordings; “the New Mellow Edwards” (Skirl 003, 2006) and “Big Choantza” (Skirl 010, 2009). www.curha.com

Composer/violinist Jason Kao Hwang received a 2009 Chamber Music America New Jazz Works grant to create Burning Bridge, a concert-length composition of multiple movements featuring an octet of traditional Chinese and Western instruments. Burning Bridge will be composed upon a Burning Bridge. The nature of this music consumes temporal illusions while enveloping the concurrence of life and death. On this Burning Bridge, the tinder of history and culture feed flames that vibrate within the core of both instinct and identity. The fire, often ignored, has always existed, with bridges burning each moment of our ever-changing lives. For Burning Bridge, the various traditions of each instrument, Chinese, jazz, and classical, will be united into a single musical voice resonant with distinct cultural overtones. With the poetic complexities inherent to this sound, the music possesses all the attributes of any human being. Burning Bridge is the experience, not the representation, a synergism, not a montage, a life form, not a concept. “Burning Bridge” by Jason Kao Hwang has been made possible with support from Chamber Music America’s 2009 New Jazz Works: Commissioning and Ensemble Development program funded through the generosity of the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation.

Trio X: After collaborating with artists such as Ken Vandermark and Peter Brotzmann, Joe McPhee discovered two like-minded improvisers in bassist Dominic Duval and drummer Jay Rosen. The trio premiered at the Vision Jazz Festival in the 1990’s, but the concert went unnoticed by the press; McPhee, Duval, and Rosen therefore decided that an apt title for the group would be Trio X. A number of Trio X recordings have since been released on the Cimp and Cadence Jazz Records labels, including “Live at Edgefest 2008.” www.triox.org
Two Rivers Ensemble: A follow-up to his previous works for the sextet that have integrated the traditional Iraqi maqam into a contemporary jazz setting, Amir ElSaffar’s new composition, "Inanna," moves beyond the duality of the maqam and jazz traditions into harmonic and melodic languages that use the microtonality but are not restricted to a mode, and rhythms that are not bound to meter. “Inanna” by Amir ElSaffar has been made possible with support from Chamber Music America’s 2009 New Jazz Works: Commissioning and Ensemble Development program funded through the generosity of the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation. This performance is also supported in part by a 2010 project grant from the Michigan Council for the Arts and Cultural Affairs.

Taylor Ho Bynum performs original music he has written specifically for his ensemble Spider Monkey Strings. Named after two mythical tricksters, Anansi the Spider of West Africa and the Monkey King of China, the group has performed a diverse range of extended suites with a genre-defying spirit and an amiable sense of humor since 2002. The band first took shape as a string quartet with cornet and guitar created to perform music Bynum wrote for a short film score. He later added tuba and drums and began writing eclectic long-form works for the ensemble, adding voice to the mix in 2008. The group has released two critically acclaimed CDs. 2005’s Other Stories (Three Suites) (482 Music) was described by Time Out New York as “an excellent record of colorful, sprawling compositions.” The ensemble’s second album, Madeleine Dreams (Firehouse 12 Records), was released in 2009; AllAboutJazz wrote “each repeated listen uncovers correspondingly more depth to the artistry of this heartfelt and challenging project...an exuberant yet weighty release.” Bynum will perform his compositions from both albums, including the title suite from the newest record, which features text from the award-winning novel Madeleine is Sleeping by his sister, Sarah Shun-lien Bynum.
Ned Rothenberg’s Clarinet Quintet was premiered in NYC on Jan. 15, 2008. It was a commission from Roulette through the New York State Council on the Arts. MIVOS quartet recorded this piece on Feb. 28, 2009 at the Brecht forum in NYC (recording available online).

MIVOS quartet is devoted to performing the works of contemporary composers and presenting new music to diverse audiences. Since the quartet’s inception they have performed and closely collaborated with an ever-expanding cadre of international composers who represent multiple aesthetics of contemporary classical composition. Commissioning and premiering new music for string quartet is essential to the quartet’s mission; MIVOS has performed works by emerging and established composers including Anna Clyne, Wolfgang Rihm, Juan Calderon, Luke DuBois, Huang Ruo, Wayne Horvitz and Kirsten Broberg. They have appeared at venues including The Stone, Issue Project Room, The Tank NYC, Monkeytown, CUNY Graduate Center, Galapagos Art Space and the Brecht forum, and were featured performers for the 2008 American Music Center Annual Meeting at the Chelsea Art Museum. Beyond expanding the string quartet repertoire, MIVOS is committed to working with guest artists and exploring multi-media projects involving live video and electronics. Improvisation is also an integral part of their performances and has led to collaborations with artists such as Ned Rothenberg, Chris Speed and Mark Feldman. MIVOS recently recorded and released Ned Rothenberg’s Quintet for Clarinet and Strings on John Zorn’s Tzadik label. Violinists Olivia De Prato and Joshua Modney, violist Victor Lowrie, and cellist Isabel Castellvi met while pursuing their Masters degrees at the Manhattan School of Music in the Contemporary Performance Program. They studied with members of leading contemporary music ensembles such as Curtis Macomber and Fred Sherry. www. mivosquartet.com

Area artist Sarah Innes exhibits paintings and drawings of subjects in her art studio, including still lifes and models. Observation is one of her favorite activities, which she puts into action through painting and drawing. “I never work from photos because, for me, that would take away from the fun and immediacy,” she says. “I also love to read and listen to music: I think of the subjects and objects in my drawings and paintings as the words, and the color, patterns and the medium as the music.”

	The exhibit runs August 26 – September 27, 2010.
