PD9 Sun Ra Band is an off-shoot of the award winning swing band, the Planet D Nonet. Key bandmembers RJ Spangler, James O'Donnell, Akunda Hollis, Tbone Paxton go back to the late 1970's with the music of Sun Ra and for one year, a charter member of Sun Ra's Arkestra, trumpeter Michale Ray, came to live in Detroit and perform in the band the four of them in Sun Messengers. Mike has brought both Tbone & RJ down to New Orleans to preform with his at the famous Jazz & Heritage Festival, where they always played Ra's funky, cosmic charts. When Tbone was joined in the front line by stalwart Sun Ra alto sax man, Marshall Allen, who leads the band today.

The year that RJ appeared with Mike at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, they were joined guitarist Trey Anastasio and it was released in 2003 on a CD. Over the years, RJ, James, Akunda and Tbone have had the opportunity to open for their hero, Sun Ra, and his Arkestra several times. Of course Sun Ra employed a number of Detroiters over the years and former Arkesta alum Jaribu Shahid has performed with the PD9 Sun Ra Band. So their is a closeness and familiarity with the music of Sun Ra, the great composer, pianist, keyboardist and bandleader. It should be noted that the PD9 Sun Ra Band was two CDs of the masters music, one featuring trumpeter Michael Ray!

RJ and the guys took a couple years off to concentrate on other projects but were recently invited to perform on a festival in downtown Detroit and so they re-vamped the band, adding some new faces which has brought ne energy to the ensemble.

Justin Jozwiak(alto sax), Dan Bennett (tenor sax), Goode Wyche III (baritone sax), James O'Donnell (trumpet 1), Allen Dennard (trumpet 2), Tbone Paxton (trombone/vocal), Josef Deas (keys, piano), Eric Nachtrab (string bass), Bob Sweet (drums/percussion), RJ Spangler (drums/percussion), Akunda Hollis (congas/percussion).
