Otis Murphy is in great demand as a solo recitalist, orchestral soloist, and clinician. He has made numerous solo appearances at prestigious musical events throughout the United States, Europe, and Asia. In addition to his frequent appearances with the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, he performs actively with orchestras and wind ensembles throughout the world.
This performance is presented by Great Lakes Performing Artist Associates. PAA is a 32-year-old not-for-profit booking and management agency dedicated to enriching the live performing arts in the Great Lakes communities.

Otis Murphy
Otis Murphy has made numerous solo appearances at prestigious musical events throughout the world, including the Ravenna Music Festival in Italy as a concerto soloist, performances at the 12th and 13th World Saxophone Congresses in Montreal, Quebec, and Minneapolis, Minnesota, and as a guest soloist with the U.S. Navy Band at the 26th Navy Band International Saxophone Symposium in Washington, D.C. He was an invited soloist at the 7th British Saxophone Congress in Wales, the Frankfurt International Classical Saxophone Festival in Germany, the Taiwan Saxophone Summer Camp, and the New England Saxophone Symposium, and Otis Murphy has taught at the Faenza International Saxophone Festival of Italy. He has enjoyed a special relationship with several concert series such as the Dame Myra Hess Concert Series in Chicago and the World Children’s Fund in Japan.
As an orchestral saxophonist, Mr. Murphy makes frequent appearances with the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, and he performs actively with wind ensembles and orchestras throughout the world. Other recent appearances include guest soloist with the Bands of America National Honors Concert Band, and as saxophone soloist with the Musashino Academia Musicae Wind Ensemble for their tour throughout Japan. The tour included notable performances in Japan’s Tokyo Opera City Concert Hall and the Isaac Stern Concert Hall.
Mr. Murphy has won many awards and prizes including a J. William Fulbright Grant to study saxophone in France, and in the Saint Louis Symphony Young Artist Competition and the Heida Hermanns Young Artist Competition in the United States, the Adolphe Sax International Saxophone Competition in Belgium, and the Jean-Marie Londeix International Saxophone Competition in France. Numerous full page and cover articles have been written about his career in the Saxophone Journal, the United Kingdom’s Clarinet and Saxophone magazine, Japan’s Pipers magazine for wind players, and The Sax, one of Japan’s leading saxophone magazines. He has appeared on numerous recordings, and his latest solo compact disc, Fantasy, has received critical acclaim.
Otis Murphy is Assistant Professor of Music at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, and a member of the artist/faculty of the Hamamatsu International Wind & Percussion Academy in Japan. He holds a Doctor of Music degree from Indiana University. He also earned the Prix de Perfectionnement at the Conservatoire National ReĢgional de Musique in France, a Master of Music from Indiana University, graduating with the Performer’s Certificate, the highest honor given to a performer at this institution. His primary teachers include Jean-Yves Fourmeau, Eugene Rousseau, and Kenneth Fischer. He is a Yamaha Performing Artist and a Vandoren Performing Artist. Otis Murphy resides in Bloomington, Indiana with his wife, a professional pianist, and their children.
Haruko Murphy
Born in Japan, Haruko Murphy moved to San Jose, California with her family as a teenager. She received the Bachelor of Music and Master of Music degrees in Piano Performance, both with Highest Distinction, from the Indiana University School of Music, studying with Distinguished Professor Menahem Pressler throughout her tenure at this institution. In addition, she studied at the Sweelinck Conservatorium in Amsterdam, Netherlands as a pupil of Jan Huizing.
She has been active as a collaborative artist in a number of woodwind recitals. Specializing in the repertoire of the classical saxophone, Ms. Murphy has performed in a number of important venues related to classical saxophone performance. She appears frequently in recital with her husband, saxophonist Otis Murphy, performing throughout the United States and abroad.
As a solo pianist, Ms. Murphy has won a number of awards that include First Prizes in the California State Concerto Competition, the Santa Clara Concerto Competition, and the Bartok Piano Competition. She also received Second Prize in the Olympiad of Arts Competition, and was a Finalist in the San Francisco Piano Competition. Along with numerous solo recital appearances, Ms. Murphy has also performed as a guest soloist with the Santa Clara Symphony Orchestra and with the Berkeley Youth Symphony Orchestra. In addition, Ms. Murphy performed a very successful debut recital in Taiwan.
Presently, Ms. Murphy leads a very fulfilling life as a dedicated wife and a home schooling mother of four young children. She almost exclusively performs with her husband, and the Murphys travel together as a family for most of their concerts.
