Jason Stein

Jason Stein is among the mere handful of improvisers who exclusively plays the bass clarinet. Stein leads the acclaimed trio Locksmith Isidore as well as his own quartet. He contributes to several of the leading bands on Chicago’s new-music scene and has brought a vital voice to the freest of free-jazz jams. Stein’s playing showcases an extraordinary expertise on his instrument, which ranges from powerful post-bop lines to ear-grabbing wails in the altissimo range. Chicago writer Neil Tesser notes that “Stein’s playing has a rawboned swagger particular to Chicago jazz in all its manifestations – from the trad playing of Bud Freeman and Jimmy McPartland in the 20s, through the tenor titans of the 50s, through the adventurers who formed the AACM in the 60s, and right up to the city’s renowned modern cadre of new-music improvisers.” After obtaining a degree at UM, Stein moved to Chicago in 2005 and has since recorded for such labels as Leo, Delmark, Not Two, Atavistic, 482 Music, Clean Feed, Astral Spirits, and Northern Spy.  Stein has performed throughout the US and Europe as both a bandleader and sideman and has amassed a discography of over forty albums.

Paul Giallorenzo

Originally from Long Island, NY, Paul Giallorenzo is a Chicago-based improviser, composer, producer, and sound designer using piano, synthesizer, keyboards, and electronics in a diverse range of contexts with a wide array of musicians in improvised, avant-jazz, experimental, and electro/acoustic music, performing regularly locally and throughout North America and Europe.  His work can be found on the Delmark Astral Spirits labels, as well as various other imprints including Leo Records (UK), NotTwo Records (Poland), and 482 Music (NY).  Paul is also a presenter, organizer, and co-founder of the music venue/art gallery Elastic Arts, producing hundreds of creative music concerts and art events in Chicago since 2001.

Chad Taylor

Chad Taylor is a composer, educator, percussionist and scholar who is a co-founder, with Rob Mazurek, of the Chicago Underground ensembles (duo, trio, quartet). Originally from Tempe, AZ, Chad grew up in Chicago where he started performing professionally at the age of 16. Chad has performed with Fred Anderson, Derek Bailey, Cooper-Moore, Pharoah Sanders, Marc Ribot, Peter Brotzmann, Malachi Favors and many others and leads his own trio, Circle Down. Chad holds degrees from the New School and Rutgers University, where he currently teaches when he is not touring all over the globe.
