Gallery Reception: Cathy Barry
This is a free event.
- Cathy Barry, visual artist
Please join us for a reception welcoming artist Cathy Barry to the KCH Gallery. All are welcome!
Cathy received a BFA from the University of Michigan School of Art and Design in 2000 and an MFA in Drawing and Painting from Eastern Michigan University in 2004. Cathy has two primary professional activities at this time: teaching art and curating exhibitions. She has been teaching art at Washtenaw Community College for 17 semesters including courses in drawing, painting and introduction to studio art. As one of the members of the faculty team at WCC, Cathy derives satisfaction from helping to shape the program and curriculum there. She began teaching Fundamentals of Drawing for Non-majors at Michigan in Winter term 2010 and is enjoying returning to her alma mater and working with U-M undergraduates. In 2009, Barry began coordinating exhibitions for the Chelsea Center for the Arts (CCA) Gallery. Cathy has taught at the CCA for 11 years and in her new role, has curated and juried both solo and group exhibitions.
Cathy's studio work continues to develop with a focus on paint application and formal concerns. She has recently intensified the use of templates, found and made , to layer and compose as a work develops. Barry primarily uses oil paint but also uses drawing and watercolor, especially in studies for larger oil works. The current work is inspired by and drawn from astrophotography and images of deep space but the real exploration lies in the shapes, color, process and the act of painting itself.
