"As on his new Album Time and Imaginary Time (envoi), the saxophonist Andrew Bishop engages in a communicative exchange with drummer Gerald Cleaver and bassist Tim Flood, exploring open space and expanding compositional frames." - The New York Times
Bishop/Cleaver/Flood has been performing with the same personnel since 1996. Founded on an uncompromising group dynamic and aesthetic freedom, B/C/F draws from a wide variety of composition and improvisational frameworks. The group’s debut 2005 recording Time and Imaginary Time (Envoi Recordings) received widespread acclaim from The New York Times, Chicago Reader, All Music Guide, Cadence Magazine, All About Jazz-New York, All About Jazz-Los Angeles, and the Detroit Free Press, among others. Their sophomore offering De Profundis (from the depths) will be released in the winter of 2012.
Tickets to Edgefest are $10 - $30 for individual ticketed events, with a limited number of student tickets available for most performances. An Edgepass ($135) is available, which allows for admission to all events, as well as a special dinner with our Edgefest artists. A Saturday daypass is available for $50.
Edgefest is made possible by the National Endowment for the Arts as part of American Masterpieces: Three Centuries of Artistic Genius.
Andrew Bishop
Andrew Bishop is a composer and improviser in highly diversified musical idioms. As a composer he has received over 20 commissions from professional organizations and universities, numerous residencies, and recognition and awards from ASCAP, The Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the Andrew W. Melon Foundation, and a nomination from the American Academy of Arts and Letters. He leads a variety of his own ensembles and his two recordings as a leader Time and Imaginary Time and the Hank Williams Project (both on Envoi Recordings) received high praise from the New York Times, Downbeat, and All About Jazz, among others. He has performed with Karl Berger, Sandip Burman, Kenny Burrell, Eugene Chadbourne, Ray Charles, Gerald Cleaver, Drew Gress, Jerry Hahn, Chris Lightcap, Mat Maneri, Tony Malaby, Hank Roberts, Jacob Sacks, Craig Taborn, Clark Terry, Matt Wilson, and John Zorn among others.
Tim Flood
Tim Flood is a bassist and composer based in Ann Arbor, MI. As a jazz bassist, he has performed with artists such as Uri Caine, Frank Lowe, Hank Roberts, Roswell Rudd and many others. His original electronic compositions and mixed-media installations have been shown at venues such as The Detroit Institute of the Arts, Pauline Oliveros' Deep Listening Space, and the Sync '05 Digital Art Festival. Tim recently completed a Masters Degree in Media Arts from the University of Michigan.
Gerald Cleaver
Gerald Cleaver was born and raised in Detroit, Michigan and is 1992 graduate of the University of Michigan. While pursuing his degree he received a National Endowment of the Arts grant to study with Victor Lewis. He has performed with a wide variety of artists including Muhal Richard Abrams, Ralph Alessi, Franck Amsallem, Bruce Barth, David Berkman, Tim Berne, Ray Bryant, Kenny Burrell, Marilyn Crispell, Marty Ehrlich, Ellery Eskelin, Tommy Flanagan, Charles Gayle, Barry Harris, Mark Helias, Bob James, Hank Jones, John Lindberg, Kevin Mahogany, Roscoe Mitchell, Joe Morris, Andrea Parkins, Craig Taborn, Jacky Terrasson, Henry Threadgill, Mark Turner, Steve Wilson, Matt Shipp, Rodney Whitaker, and Reggie Workman. As a leader, Gerald Cleaver’s Veil of Names—featuring Andrew Bishop, Mat Maneri, Craig Taborn, Ben Monder, and Reid Anderson—recording Adjust (Fresh Sound New Talent), received a nomination for “debut record of the year” from the Jazz Journalists’ Association.
