Schumann composed the Kinderszenen (Scenes from Childhood) Opus 15 in 1838. A favorite of Schumann's compositions, the works are quite playful, emulating a childlike innocence. The works are deceptive however; what's written on the page strongly contrasts the aural simplicity. The Träumerei is one of the most famous piano pieces ever written, and exists in myriad forms and transcriptions, and has been the favourite encore of several artists, including Vladimir Horowitz. Alban Berg, in reply to charges that modern music was overly complex, pointed out that this piece is in no way as simple as it appears in its harmonic structure.
