Benefiting the Food Gatherers of Ann Arbor

  • $--For entry, simply bring one can or box of non-perishable food to the door. Additional donations will be accepted.

Event Details

Join us for an evening of poetry and art to benefit the Food Gatherers of Ann Arbor.  If you're unable to attend the benefit, consider making a donation online. On average, every $5 helps bring food to the tables of 15 adults, seniors and children in our community. This event is sponsored by the Springfed Arts organization and Cave Moon Press.

Featured Readers: Keith Taylor, Joy Gaines-Friedler, Jeff Kass, Francine J. Harris, Lynn DeTurk, and selected students from the Neutral Zone.

Food Gatherers Facts:

-Food Gatherers annually distributes more than 5.25  million pounds of food to a network of more than 150 local community programs serving our neighbors in need.

-Food Gatherers provides enough food for more than 12,000 meals a day in Washtenaw County.

  • -Since Food Gatherers' inception in 1988, Food Gatherers has distributed more than 48 million pounds of food!

  • -More than 43,900 people - including more than 14,000 children and 6,500 seniors - receive emergency food each year through Food Gatherers' network of emergency food pantries and meal sites.
  •  
  • -As many as 138% more people sought food assistance from Food Gatherers' community partners in 2009 than in 2006.
  •  
  • -Nearly 70% of Food Gatherers' labor is provided by volunteers.
  •  
  • -In examining access to healthy food, we learned that only 13% of households surveyed eat the USDA recommended daily five servings of fruits and vegetables. Among those eating fewer than five servings, 70% indicated that high cost contributes to preventing them from eating more.
  •  
  • -Food Gatherers is part of Feeding America–the nation's food bank network. Feeding America provides food for 37 million people a year including nearly 14 million children and nearly 3 million seniors.
  • On average, Food Stamp benefits only last 2.5 weeks
