ÆPEX Contemporary Performance's third season will culminate with a performance at Ann Arbor's beloved Kerrytown Concert House of the renowned chamber opera As One, by American composer Laura Kaminsky, librettists Mark Campbell and Kimberly Reed, with film by Ms. Reed. This performance is made possible by a grant from the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs, and will be directed by Kerrytown Concert House's Artistic Director Kathleen Kelly, who is a veteran of the Vienna State Opera, Washington National Opera, and many other renowned opera houses across the world.

A shared creation of Kaminsky, librettist Mark Campbell and film maker Kimberly Reed, As One has been performed dozens of times across the United States and Europe since its premiere at the Brooklyn Academy of Music in 2014. Heralded for its dramatic music and remarkable story-line, which depicts a transgender individual's path to self-acceptance, Opera News celebrates As One as, "… a piece that haunts and challenges its audience with questions about identity, authenticity, compassion and the human desire for self-love and peace."

Music Director Kevin Fitzgerald will lead an ensemble of Michigan-based vocalists and instrumentalists in a multimedia production that includes compelling video projections by transgender filmmaker, and As One's co-librettist, Kimberly Reed. This special performance event also features partnerships with the Jim Toy Community Center and other Ann Arbor organizations, who will help us produce variety of supplemental community events designed to spark conversation about and facilitate engagement with As One's core themes.
