The Alberto Rojo Trio focuses on both traditional Argentinean folk songs and jazz. Most of the repertoire is composed by Alberto Rojo and jointly arranged by the trio that can also include jazz and contemporary improvisations. Rojo’s music has been recorded by artists from around the world including Mercedes Sosa’s Corazon Libre on the Deutsche Grammophone label, which won the Latin Grammy in 2006. 

 

Alberto Rojo

Alberto Rojo was born in Tucumán, Argentina. He started playing the piano at the age of six and picked up the guitar as a teenager. He studied at the Conservatorio Provincial de Música in Tucumán and earned a Ph.D. in Physics in Argentina before moving to the United States. He was a researcher at the University of Chicago and Assistant Professor at the University of Michigan. During that period he also wrote pieces that were later performed and recorded by the legendary Mercedes Sosa, Víctor Villadangos, and many prominent Latin American performers. In his life and career, he alternates science with art.

His first album, De visita, with original guitar solo compositions, was released by Epsa Music in 1999. In 2002, Argentinean label Acqua Records released Para mi sombra which focuses on an Argentinean folkloric repertoire, produced by former Pat Metheny vocalist Pedro Aznar and with Argentinean rock idol Charly García as a musical guest. The album received raving reviews in Argentina and was chosen as one of the best five folkloric albums of 2003 by Rolling Stone magazine of Argentina. In 2004 his song “Chacarera del Fuego” from the album was anthologized in the album A Rough Guide to the Music of Argentina from the English label World Music Network.

In 2005 Mercedes invited Alberto to record two duos in her albumCorazón Libre, released worldwide by the German label Deutsche Grammophon, and winner of the Latin Grammy for best folkloric album. Also in 2005 Alberto was selected to play in the Mercat de Música Viva Vic (Cataluña, Spain). In 2006 he made his debut as an orquestrator in the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires with his song composed in collaboration with Luis Gurevich, and perform by the Theater's symphony and Mercedes Sosa as a soloist.

In 2008 Block M Records (the University of Michigan Label) releasedAmaicha, with the Alberto Rojo Trio. In 2009, Acqua records realesed his Tangentes, his third solo album, chosen by La Nación ́s music critic Gabriel Plaza as the best folkloric album of the year.

Alberto has toured with Mercedes Sosa in Europe and the US, and has performed internationally in Ronnie Scott’s in London, the auditory of the International Development Bank in Washington and many major venues in Argentina.

The Alberto Rojo Trio preforms regularly in the Detroit area, with appearances at the Detroit Institute of Arts and the New School in Chicago.

In addition, Alberto is on the faculty of the Physics Department at Oakland University, has written three books essays and popular science, and lectures around the world on the connection between art and science.  

Michael Gould

Michael Gould is a Professor of Music at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Michigan in the Jazz and Contemporary Improvisation Department in the School of Music, Theater & Dance and the Residential College (College of Literature, Science and the Arts). Dr. Gould has received international recognition as a performer and scholar in the field of drumset, contemporary percussion performance and pedagogy. He has performed and given clinics all over the world. Michael has released over 100 educational percussion videos through playalongmusic.com. He has also composed and performed music for a wide range of ensembles and venues from the Münich Opera and Ballet to National Public Radio. He has had unique collaborations with engineers, material scientists, painters, poets, dancers, athletes and business professionals. His new book for the iPad-- The Drum Diaries is available worldwide through the Apple iTunes store. He is also the music director for Tangente Dance Company in Berlin, Germany. Gould is also a member of the Board of Advisors for the Percussive Arts Society. His latest piece Remember Me was just performed at the Kunsthaus Dahlem in Berlin, Germany and include dance, theater, percussion, electronics, and original artwork.
